Chimney breasts and alcoves
Treat a chimney breast as extra wall length, and alcoves either side as their own short strips — measure each separately for the most accurate total.
Open-plan spaces
If your living room opens into a hallway or kitchen, decide where the wallpaper will logically end and only measure that section.
Larger rooms benefit from a buffer roll
On bigger jobs, order slightly more than the exact estimate to cover pattern-matching waste across many more strips than a small room needs.
Common questions
Should I paper all four walls or just one?
Many living rooms use wallpaper on a single feature wall with paint elsewhere. Measure just that wall for a feature-wall plan.
How do bay windows affect the count?
A bay window interrupts more wall than a standard window — measure its full opening width, not just the flat frontage.
How do I calculate wallpaper for a chimney breast?
Treat the chimney breast as three sections: the front face of the breast and the two alcove walls on either side. Measure each section's width and the wall height. Calculate the drop count for each section (width ÷ 52 cm, rounded up), multiply by the cut length (ceiling height plus pattern repeat), and sum the three sections into your overall total. Do not treat the whole chimney-breast wall as a single flat measurement.
How many rolls of wallpaper do I need for a living room?
A typical living room of about 4 × 5 m with a 2.5 m ceiling needs around 12–16 rolls for all four walls with a plain or small-repeat paper. With a large pattern repeat (above 60 cm), expect 18–24 rolls. For a single chimney-breast feature wall, 3–5 rolls is usually enough.
