Use the full wall height regardless — furniture placement doesn't reduce ceiling height, only floor-level obstructions like a wardrobe do.

Calculate the same way as any room: measure the total width of the walls, account for the pattern repeat, and divide by the usable drops per roll. Children's rooms often have complications — built-in furniture, sloping ceilings, small dimensions with a large repeat — that mean the standard room-perimeter formula under-estimates cutting waste. Non-woven and vinyl-coated wallpapers are the most practical choice — they can be wiped clean, are easier to hang around furniture, and are straightforward to remove when the design brief changes. Avoid delicate papers like grasscloth, foil, or silk-effect. For patterns, designs broadly themed rather than tied to a specific character or film tend to age better.

Rarely by much. A bed, toy chest, or low bookcase sits well below ceiling height, so the wall above and around it still needs full-height paper — only a fixed, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe or built-in unit removes a real section of wall from the count. Measure the full wall and let the planner account for any fitted furniture separately.

A typical bed-head wall of 2.5–3 m wide with a standard 2.4 m ceiling needs 2–3 rolls with a plain or small-repeat paper. A large-repeat character print (60 cm or more) can push that to 3–4 rolls for the same wall.
