Bathroom wallpaper is one of the most searched wallpaper ideas queries, for a good reason — it can transform a functional room, but choosing the wrong paper means peeling seams and mould within a year. The room is also usually small and broken up by a bath, shower enclosure, and sanitaryware, which makes accurate measuring trickier than a straightforward rectangular room. 'Waterproof' or fully vinyl papers are rated to survive splashback near a basin or bath. Check the specific rating before buying — a paper that's only humidity-rated will fail if it's within splash range of the bath or basin, even if it copes fine with general bathroom steam.
Keep paper out of direct shower spray, whatever the rating claims
Even fully vinyl, waterproof-rated wallpaper shouldn't go inside a shower enclosure or in direct, sustained spray — the seams are still a weak point over years of exposure. Use wallpaper on the drier walls (away from the bath and shower) and tile, panelling, or a waterproof paint in the wet zone itself. Ventilation matters as much as the paper you choose
Even a fully waterproof paper will develop mould behind it if the room has poor ventilation and steam has nowhere to go. Run an extractor fan during and after every shower or bath, and use a fungicidal paste when hanging bathroom wallpaper regardless of the paper's own rating — it's a cheap extra safeguard against mould developing at the wall behind the paper.
Sanitaryware and a shower enclosure cut the paperable area sharply
A bathroom's wall area is reduced far more than other rooms by fixed fittings — a bath, a shower enclosure, a vanity unit, a WC — each of which blocks a section of wall. Measure only the genuinely paperable sections, wall by wall, rather than the full perimeter. It's common for a bathroom to need only half the wall area you'd expect from its floor dimensions.
A small room still needs the pattern repeat accounted for
Bathrooms are usually small — 2–3 m per side — so a plain or small-repeat paper might need only 2–4 rolls. But a large-repeat pattern still forces every strip to start at the same point, and in a small room that waste is proportionally bigger. Favour a small or geometric repeat in a compact bathroom, or budget an extra roll if you're set on a large-scale print.
